A very special box build with some amazing grain
This box was for a life-long friend to put her husband's ashes into. The request was to have a lid on the box that could be opened. The box is made from reclaimed Australian hardwoods and the lid insert is Camphor Laurel.

    Absolutely beautiful work. Thanks very much for taking the time to make videos. I inherited a really simple and really effective picture-frame clamp I bet you've seen, just some threaded rod and 4 L-shaped blocks. It changed picture-frame clamping for me from highly stressful to the easiest part of the job. It's a simple design that if I had ever thought of it I could have made myself I'm sure. It can be extended with more threaded rod and coupler nuts to make it fit huge frames. You can see a current idea of one if you search "Garrett Wade Frame Clamp." Would be fun to make I bet!

    Excellent tutorial. Love the masking tape trick. Very clever. Would love to try making frames for my paintings but I don't have a proper saw. @@mrboics no not really mate. I’ve never had that issue with any of my builds and particularly in pieces that small (I think it’s more of a problem for northern hemisphere makers who have scared the rest of into thinking it’s a huge issue) 😂

      Interesting. I'm based in Melbourne and a 35cm wide piece of pine move quite a bit for me. It may have been poorly dried in the first place though..? I rebuilt the piece and it's now a loose panel within a mitre. Don't take my word though, I'm pretty inexperienced compared to you!

    Great Video and thanks for posting, people don’t realise the time it take to prepare timber for the build, I know I am surprised by how long it takes me and it was great to see how you go about it. I love repurposing old timber and giving it a new life. Very beautiful box by the way, great mitres and a great hinge fit!, I do have a question being unfamiliar with lasers - I have a small cnc machine where I need to clamp down the wood to ensure stability during the cut, but did I see right that when using a laser there is no need to clamp down your project? Many thanks Brenton

    • @DownUnderWoodWorks
      @DownUnderWoodWorks Місяць тому

      Thanks very much Brenton, the amount of work that goes into making something is rarely evident in the finished piece. Yes, when engraving with a laser the piece doesn’t need to be fixed down because nothing is actually touching the piece other than the laser beam. Sometimes when cutting components out it may be necessary to hold things down, just depends on the task and material though.
